Ammunition box most likely came from passing boat: MNDF

The box of ammunition that was discovered on the beach of an uninhabited island in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll most likely came from a boat passing through near Maldives, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has said.An official from the MNDF said that the box full of ammunition found beached on the shores of the island was discovered last Monday by crew members from a safari boat that was travelling near the island. The official said that it wasn’t unusual for such items and even weapons to be carried to be carried by the tide and beached on the shores of islands and that it had happened from time to time. The box of ammunition most likely came from a boat that was passing through Maldives, he said.“We have seen such incidents occur in Maldives previously too,” he said. “Most likely they fell overboard from foreign vessels passing through Maldivian waters.”The official said the box was around 1ft in length and that the box was now under their supervision. The MNDF advised not to touch or retrieve such items of unknown origin or nature that gets beached onto shores or are found floating in the sea. They also advised anyone who came across such an item to notify the relevant authorities immediately.
